While the installed packages are not fully equivalent the intention is the same.
If this is the first time you are trying out La Te X, you don't even need to install anything.
More specifically, the basic requirement is to have a Te X compiler (which is used to generate output files from source), fonts, and the La Te X macro set.
Optional, and recommended installations include an attractive editor to write La Te X source documents (this is probably where you will spend most of your time), and a bibliographic management program to manage references if you use them a lot.
